Packers must pay up to Jaire Alexander for picking him at 18

Posted on by

Another consequence of a losing season: For just the second time since 2011, the Packers must guarantee the contract for their first-round pick.

A six-time Pro Bowl selection and three-time first-team All-Pro, Thomas is entering the final year of the four-year, $40 million extension he signed in 2014. That contract was tops among safeties in terms of annual average when it was signed but now ranks sixth, according to

Thomas told ESPN at the Pro Bowl in January that he may hold out if he doesn’t get a new deal before the season, but general manager John Schneider has said twice since then that Thomas’ representatives have informed him that he won’t hold out.

And he figures to be a focal point of the offense as head coach Todd Smith will look to utilize all of his tools.

He plans to have me move around, be on the line as well, he said. He wants me to be a versatile tight end, block and catch passes. And I look forward to it.

Via the Associated Press, Manziel was primarily an observer on Sunday, his first day of work with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

“That’s because he doesn’t know the terminology, he doesn’t know anything,” Tiger-Cats coach June Jones said, via the AP. “[Quarterbacks coach] Dan [Morrison] was walking through each route as it was called. But [on Monday] guess what? We’re going to walk in and start taking a couple.”

Manziel realizes it will be an adjustment, especially as it relates to the options available to each receiver.

“Spacing is a little bit different on the defensive side if I had to look at anything,” Manziel said. “On offense, I’ve never ran this many routes that are predicated off of one defender . . . every route has an opportunity to break three or four different ways, which is different. . . . But I think it gives you the versatility and offensive weapons to be able to attack coverages more intensely than it would just running a fixed route. I know it’s going to take some time . . . .”ravens_123

Super Bowl 2018: Odds, point spread, and over/under for Eagles vs. Patriots

Posted on by

Editor’s update No. 2: Wow, that was a heck of a game. The Eagles stunned the Patriots, winning by a final score of 41-33. The point spread had the Patriots as 4.5-point favorites, but instead, the Eagles won this game outright. They were at +176 on the moneyline, and I imagine plenty of Philly fans were betting on that. A lot of money came in on the Eagles early in the Super Bowl week, so it is safe to say Las Vegas was not pleased with this outcome.

Davis and Cousins were on pace to become the first teammates ever to each average 25 points and 10 rebounds per game when Cousins went down with the season-ending injury on Jan. 26. The Pelicans were sixth in the West at that point and climbing in the standings. Cousins was averaging 25.2 points, 12.9 rebounds and 5.4 assists per game. According to ESPN Stats & Information, over the past 50 seasons, only four players averaged those numbers for an entire season — and all four were named MVP.

The highest-rated Super Bowl of the past decade featured the Patriots and Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl 49. That game finished with a 47.5 rating and an average of 114.4 million viewers. Ratings have declined each of the last three years, with this year’s down three years after slight increases each of the previous two seasons.

There are many theories and guesses as to why the NFL’s ratings are going down, some more valid than others. But even if fans are tuning out of the regular season and playoffs, the Super Bowl remains the one event guaranteed to do huge numbers. That was true once again in 2018, even with the slight decline.

Ahead of her anthem, per usual, people were betting on her singing it for over two minutes, -150, and under two minutes, +110. You could even bet on her hair color, or if she’d be airborne!

Pederson also said that there’s a reason he’s kind of a hardass coach. It’s because this is the payoff.

You guys get on me a lot about dress code and practice and doing things. Well, guess what? It’s for this moment right here. For this moment, Pederson said. It’s the discipline that it takes to win this game.

For casual football fans who just want to enjoy the game while hopefully making a quick buck in the process, squares should scratch that itch just fine.

Another common way of playing is to split the pot four ways and hand out 25 percent each, depending on the score at the end of every quarter. You could also do 50/50 based on the halftime and final scores, or hand out pot increments based on every new score, or any other random variations your party can come up with. Since there are no hard-and-fast rules, the only limits are your imagination.49ers_012

Christian McCaffrey injury update: Panthers RB likely to play Sunday vs. Saints

Posted on by

Christian McCaffrey won’t let his injury keep him out of Carolina’s toughest test this season.

The Panthers (8-3) will seek redemption for their Week 3 loss to New Orleans when they battle the Saints (8-3) for NFC South supremacy at 4:25 p.m. ET Sunday.

According to the FBI timeline, Adidas and Jurich were nailing down the sponsorship agreement while company representatives were allegedly working to bring 6-foot-7 small forward Brian Bowen to the university. Whether those two deals — one announced at a news conference, the other negotiated illicitly in the presence of an undercover agent — were somehow related is one of the major unanswered questions of the spiraling scandal.

Will he get the Eagles to the Super Bowl? We’ll have to wait and see.

A number of current and former NFL Network employees, including Hall of Fame running back Marshall Faulk, have been suspended from their duties pending an investigation into disturbing sexual harassment allegations by a former employee.

Faulk, Heath Evans, Ike Taylor, Donovan McNabb, and former executive producer at NFL Network Eric Weinberger are among those accused, in a complaint obtained by Bloomberg. Weinberger is now the president of Bill Simmons’ media group.

Ex-NFL Network wardrobe stylist Jami Cantor, who filed a wrongful termination suit in October, alleges in an amended complaint that Faulk would ask her “deeply personal and invasive questions” about her sex life. The suit also claims Faulk touched Cantor’s breasts and groped her.

Weinberger allegedly sent “several nude pictures of himself and sexually explicit texts” to Cantor. He also allegedly told her to touch his crotch and that she was “put on earth to pleasure me.”chargers_006

The Panthers thought they were going to get a break during the bye with a New Orleans loss

Posted on by

The Atlanta Falcons held on for a 34-31 win in Seattle on Monday night as the Seahawks’ game-tying field goal attempt with seven seconds left came up just short.

Atlanta had an 11-point lead with 3:52 to play but the Seahawks answered with a quick touchdown before regaining possession and driving into Falcons territory with time winding down.

Through everything, before Sherman went down, they somehow kept it together. They fixed some early problems against the run, and they kept making big plays against the pass with the rush and coverage working well together.

They can assume Thomas will be back for the next game and can hope Chancellor, who left near the end Thursday on a cart, won’t have an extended absence. But not having Sherman, the proverbial heart and soul of the back end, around is uncharted territory.

The Panthers thought they were going to get a break during the bye with a New Orleans loss, but the Saints’ comeback win means the Panthers are still down a full game and a head-to-head tiebreaker. To win the division or at least secure a wild card, they need a consistently good Cam Newton from here on out.

Jared Goff and Todd Gurley got cooled by a top-level defense in Minnesota, and the Rams’ issues with run defense and downfield coverage got further exposed by a balanced offense. They will keep getting tough tests as an upstart down the stretch.

So what are the odds the Rams and Goff can continue their success this week?nike_chargers_210

Kershaw vs. Keuchel could swing the World Series

Posted on by

The players who populate the Houston Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers postseason rosters don’t have the luxury of sitting back, taking a deep breath and Nicklas Backstrom Jersey enjoying their involvement in what could turn out to be a classic World Series. They’re too immersed in individual confrontations, the inning-by-inning strategy and all the other minutia that makes October baseball such a challenge and a joy to relive and dissect.

The Jets could actually be in the hunt still if they could close out games late. They’ve been outscored by 56 points in the fourth quarter, second worst in the NFL. Josh McCown has a Total QBR of 12 in the fourth quarter this year (and a 69 Total QBR in first three quarters).

Murray finally made good use of his playing time on Sunday with a 26-point outing in Brooklyn, and it’s not like the Knicks are doing a better job defending point guards. In fact, they’re kind of awful at it. Murray might not be the point guard so many of us envisioned, but his price remains depressed and, at the very least, he should be in for another 20-point night.

After having 19 and 10 against Washington, Brandon Ingram was a nonfactor for most of this game, with nine points and two rebounds. The Lakers just didn’t have enough offense down the stretch when Toronto took over the game. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope also struggled offensively with only two points to go with seven rebounds.

Julius Randle had another strong game and appears to be getting comfortable with Womens Thaddeus Young Jersey his new role off the bench. Playing angry and inspired, Randle gave the Lakers energy and hustle on both ends with 18 points.

The Panthers will be battle-tested if they make the playoffs.

Posted on by

What has gone right: The defense is re-energized thanks to the return of linebacker Luke Keuchly and free-agent addition of Julius Peppers, who has 4.5 sacks playing in a situational role. Running back Christian McCaffrey has become the dual-purpose backfield threat for which Carolina hoped when it made him a first-round draft pick.

What has gone wrong: Before his strong performance against New England, quarterback Cam Newton didn’t look quite right coming off his offseason shoulder surgery. Newton also lost his favorite target until at least November when tight end Greg Olsen broke his foot in Week 2.

What’s next:Only two of their 12 remaining opponents (Chicago and Miami) are currently below .500.

What has gone right: The offense is far more dynamic with quarterback Alex Smith taking more chances downfield and rookie Kareem Hunt supplying a punch in the running game that has been lacking since Jamaal Charles’ heyday. The return of outside linebacker Justin Houston from knee problems has helped make Kansas City’s defense ferocious once again.

What has gone wrong: Eric Berry, arguably the NFL’s best safety, was lost for the season in Week 1 to a ruptured Achilles tendon. Interior offensive line depth is being stressed because of injuries.

What’s next: As well as they’re playing, don’t expect the Chiefs to remain unbeaten much longer with a tough stretch upcoming against Houston, Pittsburgh, Oakland, Denver and Dallas. Kansas City would get a boost if Raiders quarterback Derek Carr (back) and Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott (pending six-game suspension) were sidelined for those meetings.

Raiders center Rodney Hudson knocked down the same Titans defender TWICE on the same play

Disrespectful Blocks of the Week are back! Finally, the regular season is here, and we got some great ones for you this week.

Let’s start on Thursday night with Chiefs center Mitch Morse. Mitch started as a rookie and has slowly grown into a reliable part of that offensive line. Blocks like this, however, will make him a Pro Bowler.

First play of the game is a mid zone to the right, and he hits the hip of the three technique, then climbs to the linebacker and gets him on the ground. The body control is excellent!

And even though Seattle finally got into the end zone on a 9-yard Wilson pass to Paul Richardson, Blair Walsh missed the extra point.

Seattle couldn’t get into a rhythm offensively, and it looked hapless for the second week in a row. The one bright spot offensively was running back Chris Carson. He racked up 93 yards on the ground. Carson was especially effective late in the game when the 49ers defense was wearing down.

Still, despite the pressure Wilson was under and how inaccurate he was throughout the game, Pete Carroll stuck with the pass. Wilson threw the ball 39 times, and the Seahawks didn’t shift to a hurry-up offense until the fourth quarter.

The 49ers didn’t look much better offensively. Brian Hoyer finished with just 99 passing yards, no touchdowns, and one interception. Carlos Hyde did all he could, with 124 yards on 15 carries. But it wasn’t enough for the Niners to prevail.

Through two weeks of the season, one thing is for certain: The NFC West is shaping up to be one of the league’s weaker divisions.nike_redskins_2572-223x223

Rex Burkhead had the most recent touchdown for the Patriots and Bengals

Posted on by

Rex Burkhead scored his first touchdown with the New England Patriots on Sunday against the Saints. It was a beautifully laid-out pass by Tom Brady, giving the Patriots a 6-0 lead.

It’s great that Burkhead in finally on the board in his new home, but what’s even more interesting is what the score means:

Burkhead had a great game that afternoon in Cincinnati, too. He had 27 carries Authentic Carl Davis Jersey for 119 yards and two touchdowns in the Bengals’ 27-10 win against the Ravens.

The first two weeks have been a disaster for the Bengals. After Terrance West Womens Jersey closing last season with an easy win over the Ravens, they opened 2017 with a 20-0 loss against them.

Then, Thursday night, they lost 13-9 to the Texans, making it two games without a score.

Congrats to Burkhead. If the NFL would have ended in that moment, you’d have the last touchdown for two NFL franchises.

Dak’s ability to gain trust from his teammates and lead them to success is a unique trait that very few people have. He has earned the trust and respect from everybody on the roster from his second-year mate Ezekiel Elliott, to the offensive line, to the future Hall of Famer Jason Witten. Dak commands a huddle like very few do.

He also has a work ethic that is second-to-none. Jerry Jones compared his quarterback’s work ethic to that of Peyton Manning.

“Everything we have seen, Dak has those kinds of qualities that when you think of Peyton Manning, you think of how he really developed his skills, how hard he worked at it and how he really left nothing that he was aware of, how he addressed every nuance of his game and that’s my picture of Peyton and I know it to be accurate.

“I think that might be Dak’s finest quality, his ability to look for every way he can to get better and continue to do it, so I think there will be really dramatic improvement.”

Watt announced the drive has raised more than $12 million in donations.

Posted on by

McCoy’s workload is expected to increase this season after the Bills declined to match the New England Patriots’ restricted free-agent offer this offseason for Mike Gillislee, who served as McCoy’s backup last year. Buffalo also released running back Jonathan Williams on Sunday, leaving veteran Mike Tolbert as their main backup to McCoy.

“I’m a player,” McCoy said. “I like to play. I like to compete. And guys on other teams, I’m sure the Jets, they’ll tell you that, that I like to compete. I’m always up for a challenge. I am human. I think football, guys they get tired, they come out. Like I said before, that’s what building a whole roster is all about.”

On Thursday afternoon, Watt announced the drive has raised more than $12 million in donations. He passed the $13 million mark on Thursday night before hitting $15 million on Friday and passing $17 million on Saturday.

ESPN says the company launched on Wednesday, but only features three teams. According to their website, they have jerseys for the Seattle Seahawks, San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions.

Fans can get a variety of players’ jerseys, which include Barry Sanders, Calvin Johnson, Eric Ebron, Ziggy Ansah, Golden Tate, Matthew Stafford, Jarrad Davis, Marvin Jones and Theo Riddick.

The Lions jerseys also come in the Honolulu Blue home jersey, white away and silver color rush. Plus, some players have the throwback Honolulu blue retired jersey like Sanders.t_rangers_016-115x115

Who the hell is new Ravens QB David Olson?

Posted on by

The Baltimore Ravens had to sign a new quarterback after Joe Flacco suffered a back injury that will keep him out of practice for a while.

Despite talking up Colin Kaepernick on Thursday, the Ravens passed on the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback as well as other free agents with NFL experience to take David Olson instead.

If you’re not sure who Olson is, neither is anyone else.

Even the Ravens aren’t quite sure what his name is. On Thursday night, the team announced the signing of “David Olson” on Twitter, but as of Friday morning, it lists “David Olsen” on its roster.

Like the Browns, the Jaguars have been a joke in the NFL for a long time. But similar to Cleveland, they’ve continued to add young players and complemented it with free agent signings like Calais Campbell and A.J. Bouye.

The team’s defense was exciting in 2016 and leaning heavily on Leonard Fournette means Jacksonville shouldn’t take a step back after a 3-13 season last year, no matter how much Blake Bortles does Blake Bortles things.

Donald shot up draft boards after dominant performances at the Senior Bowl and NFL Combine. Despite being a bit undersized for an interior rusher (6’1, 285 pounds), Donald has quickly developed into one of the best all-around linemen in the league. In three seasons, he already has 28 sacks and is a disruptive force on nearly every play. Opposing offenses have their hands full trying to account for Donald’s presence. Now we’ll get to see him work in Wade Phillips’ defensive scheme, which should be a joy. patriots_302-180x180
